Common Used Car Scams and How to Avoid Them

Updated July 2026

Most used-car scams follow a few well-worn patterns. Learn them, and you'll spot trouble before it costs you.

The vast majority of sellers are honest, but scammers target used-car buyers because the money involved is significant. Here are the common cons and how to shut them down.

Title washing and salvage fraud

A flood or salvage car gets its title "washed" across state lines and sold as clean. Defense: run the VIN history, inspect for damage, and confirm the title brand.

Curbstoning

An unlicensed dealer poses as a private seller to unload problem cars while dodging dealer regulations. Signs: the seller's name doesn't match the title, they're vague about the car's history, or they seem to have several cars for sale. Defense: verify the title is in the seller's name and meet at their home, not a parking lot.

Odometer rollback

Mileage wound back to raise the price. Defense: cross-check the history report's recorded readings and confirm wear matches the miles.

Fake escrow and wire-transfer scams

Common in online sales: the "seller" (or "buyer") pushes for payment through a fake escrow service, wire transfer, or gift cards, often with a story about being out of town or deployed. Defense: never wire money or use gift cards, never pay for a car you haven't seen, and be very wary of any deal that can't happen in person.

Deposit scams

A too-good-to-be-true listing asks for a deposit to "hold" the car before you see it — then vanishes. Defense: never pay a deposit on a car you haven't inspected in person.

The "mechanic found a problem" flip

Pressure tactics and bait-and-switch on price at signing. Defense: get the agreed price in writing and read every line before signing.

Universal protections

  • Meet in person, in a safe public place, in daylight.
  • Verify the title is clean and in the seller's name.
  • Run the VIN history and get a pre-purchase inspection.
  • Never wire money, use gift cards, or pay for an unseen car.
  • If it feels off or too good to be true, walk away.

Buying from reputable local dealers and transparent private sellers avoids nearly all of this. Browse local listings from your area.
