How to Finance a Used Car: A Complete Guide

Updated July 2026

Financing a used car well can save you hundreds or thousands over the life of the loan. Here's how to do it right.

How you finance a car matters almost as much as which car you buy. A little preparation gets you a better rate and keeps you out of a bad loan.

Get pre-approved first

Before you shop, get pre-approved for a loan at your bank or a local credit union. This tells you exactly what rate and amount you qualify for, so you can negotiate the car's price on its own instead of getting tangled up in payment math. Credit unions in particular often beat dealer financing on used-car rates.

Understand the numbers

  • APR is the true cost of the loan — compare offers by APR, not monthly payment.
  • Term length: longer terms mean lower payments but more total interest, and you can end up owing more than the car's worth. Keep the term as short as you can comfortably afford — 4 years or less is a good target on a used car.
  • Down payment: more down means less borrowed, less interest, and instant equity. Aim for around 20% if you can.

Dealer financing vs. your own loan

Dealers can arrange financing, which is convenient and occasionally competitive — but they may mark up the rate. The smart move is to bring your own pre-approval and let the dealer try to beat it. If they can, great; if not, you've got your loan ready.

Watch out for

  • Focusing only on the monthly payment (it hides a long term and high total cost).
  • Rolling negative equity from a trade-in into the new loan.
  • Add-ons bundled into the financing you didn't ask for.

If your credit is rough

You can still get financed, but expect a higher rate. A larger down payment helps, and a credit union may work with you more flexibly than a big lender. Avoid "buy here, pay here" lots with sky-high rates if you have any better option.

Know your budget and pre-approval, then browse local listings by price to find the right car.
