Red Flags to Watch for When Buying a Used Car
Most used-car problems announce themselves if you know the signs. Here are the red flags worth walking away from.
A good deal feels straightforward. When several of these warning signs show up, slow down — or walk away entirely.
Paperwork red flags
- No clear title, or a title not in the seller's name. Never buy a car the seller can't prove they own.
- A salvage or rebuilt title that wasn't disclosed up front, or a price that seems too good with no explanation.
- A VIN on the car that doesn't match the title or the door-jamb sticker.
- Reluctance to provide a vehicle history report or let you run the VIN.
Condition red flags
- Mismatched paint, uneven panel gaps, or overspray — signs of accident repair.
- A musty smell, damp carpets, or water lines — possible flood damage.
- Warning lights that are off when they shouldn't be (a bulb removed to hide a problem).
- Fresh undercoating that could be hiding rust or leaks.
- An odometer reading that doesn't match the car's wear or service records.
Seller red flags
- Pressure to buy immediately or "another buyer is coming."
- Refusing an independent inspection — one of the biggest warning signs there is.
- Wanting to meet only in odd locations, or requesting payment by wire transfer or gift cards.
- Answers that keep changing, or vague responses about the car's history.
Trust your gut
If something feels off, it probably is. There's always another car. Buying from a reputable local dealer or a private seller who's transparent and lets you inspect the vehicle avoids nearly all of these problems.
