The Best Questions to Ask a Used Car Dealer
A few pointed questions early on tell you a lot about both the car and the seller. Here's what to ask.
Good dealers expect questions and answer them straight. Vague or defensive responses are a signal in themselves. Here's what to ask before you get attached to a vehicle.
About the car's history
- "Can I see the vehicle history report?" A reputable seller will show you one, or let you run the VIN yourself.
- "Has it been in any accidents?" Compare the answer to what the history report says.
- "Do you know how many previous owners it had?" Fewer owners and local history are good signs.
- "Are there service records?" A documented maintenance history is worth a lot.
About the car's condition
- "Has anything been repaired or replaced recently?"
- "Are there any known issues or warning lights?"
- "Can I take it to my own mechanic for an inspection?" A "no" here is a major red flag.
About the money
- "What's the out-the-door price with all fees included?" This is the number that matters. Ask them to itemize any dealer fees.
- "Is there any warranty, and what does it cover?"
- "Is the price negotiable?"
Read the answers, not just the words
How a dealer responds matters as much as what they say. Willingness to let you inspect the car, transparency on fees, and readiness to share history all point to a seller worth trusting. Pressure, dodging, or "you'll have to decide today" are reasons to slow down.
