What Documents You Need to Buy a Used Car in Kentucky

Updated July 2026

Kentucky has a few specific paperwork steps for used-car purchases. Here's what you'll need so registration goes smoothly at your county clerk's office.

Buying a used car in Kentucky means getting the title transferred and the car registered in your name at your local County Clerk's office. Here's what to have ready. (Requirements can change, so it's always worth confirming the current details with your county clerk before you go.)

What the seller should give you

  • The signed-over title. The seller must sign the title over to you, with the sale price and odometer reading filled in. This is the single most important document — never buy without it.
  • A bill of sale. Kentucky buyers generally need a bill of sale showing the purchase price, and for a fair-market-value or notarized situation it may need to be notarized. It documents the sale and the price used for tax.
  • Any service records the seller has (not required, but valuable to keep).

What you'll need to bring

  • Proof of Kentucky insurance for the vehicle — you'll need coverage in place to register it.
  • Your valid photo ID (Kentucky driver's license).
  • The properly assigned title and bill of sale from the seller.
  • Money for taxes and fees — Kentucky charges a motor vehicle usage tax based on the purchase price or the car's value, plus title and registration fees.

The VIN inspection step

If the car is coming from out of state (for example, a purchase just across the river in Illinois), Kentucky typically requires a sheriff's VIN inspection before you can title it. It's a quick check that the VIN matches the paperwork, usually done at the sheriff's office. Cars already titled in Kentucky generally don't need this.

Where it all happens

Title transfer and registration are handled at your local County Clerk's office — McCracken County for Paducah, Marshall County for Benton, Graves County for Mayfield, Calloway County for Murray, and so on. Bring everything above, and you'll leave registered.
