What to Look for When Buying a Used Car in Kentucky
Buying a used car in the Four Rivers area doesn't have to be a gamble. Here's a straightforward checklist to run through before you hand over any money.
Whether you're buying from a dealer in Paducah or a private seller in Benton, a methodical once-over protects you from expensive surprises. Work through this checklist before you commit.
Exterior and body
- Look down each panel in daylight for mismatched paint, ripples, or filler — signs of past collision repair.
- Check panel gaps are even. Uneven gaps can mean poor accident repair.
- Look for rust under the wheel wells, door sills, and frame. Kentucky winters and road salt take a toll.
- Check tire tread depth and that all four tires match. Uneven wear can point to alignment or suspension problems.
Under the hood
- Check the oil — dark is normal, but a milky or foamy cap can signal a head gasket problem.
- Look for leaks, corroded battery terminals, and cracked belts or hoses.
- Check coolant and transmission fluid levels and color.
Interior and electronics
- Test every window, lock, light, the AC, heat, and the infotainment screen.
- Turn the key to "on" and confirm the dashboard warning lights illuminate then go out — a seller can't hide a check-engine light that way.
- Check for water stains or a musty smell, which can indicate flood damage.
The test drive
- Drive on both city streets and a highway stretch. Listen for knocking, whining, or grinding.
- Test the brakes firmly — no pulling, pulsing, or squealing.
- Make sure it shifts smoothly and tracks straight with your hands light on the wheel.
The paperwork
- Confirm the VIN on the dash matches the title and the door-jamb sticker.
- Get the title in hand and check it's clean (not salvage or rebuilt) unless that's disclosed and priced in.
- Run the VIN through a history report to check for accidents, title problems, and odometer rollback.
If everything checks out, you're in good shape. If several items raise questions, it's worth the cost of a professional pre-purchase inspection before you decide — more on that in our other guides.
